Pharmacy compounding is the practice of preparing customized medication formulations to address individual patient requirements that cannot otherwise be met with commercially available drugs from a pharmaceutical company.

A healthcare provider may choose to prescribe a compounded medication for a variety of reasons such as:

• Allergies: Patient is allergic to fillers or dyes in commercially prepared formulations.
• Availability: A medication may be on a short supply or unavailable commercially.
